Dr Charles Margerison’s song brings the Australian spirit

We all know Waltzing Matilda, the bush ballad etched into Australia’s soul. But do you know ‘G’day Mate G’day’? This vibrant song of pride, written by Dr Charles Margerison, a resident at Odyssey Lifestyles captures the nation’s welcoming spirit.

Sung with gusto by students in the Miami Primary School Choir on the Gold Coast, it celebrates friends, family, and visitors while honouring Australia’s mateship tradition from the early days.

Dr Margerison arrived in Australia from England in 1979 and stepping into a new world says the song reflects the welcome he received when he arrived. “Strangers greeted me with ‘G’day’ and an instant mateship that made this country feel like home from day one,” he says.

As a psychologist by profession, he focused on character education and channels that experience into ‘G’day Mate G’day’ to build belonging.

“The song fosters confidence and community, especially for kids navigating new friendships or classrooms,” he says. “These tunes give kids a chance to celebrate their country while drawing visitors to its heart.”

Miami Primary School’s choir embodies this, with young voices belting out lyrics that echo Australia’s inclusive heritage while highlighting history from the early days.

“It honours both Indigenous hospitality and the spirit of welcome that has defined this land,” says Dr Margerison.

The song invites everyone – young and old, friends, tourists, immigrants – into the fold, preserving cultural traditions while embracing modern Australia. Schools can use it to turn dry history lessons into harmonious celebrations of shared stories.

Charles Margerison has also written the song called ‘Amazing Australians’ that celebrates the achievements of all who have contributed to the country. The music for both songs was produced at Bignote Productions on the Gold Coast.

“Amazing Australians’ celebrates the achievers and battlers who turned tough terrain into this beautiful, safe country,” he says. “From taming rivers to building peaceful cities, the lyrics spotlight resilience and optimism, qualities I hope are embraced.”

Shaylee Gear, a contestant in the 2024 Australian Idol competition, sang Amazing Australians, adding her star quality to its message.

Both songs are now available for licensing and recording.
