Sharing the Christmas Spirit with some festive fun

02 December, 2021

Odyssey kicked off the festive season with a special visit from the Little Scholars, Santa Claus and Channels 7 and 9 Gold Coast News.

Odyssey provided a guide on how to bring Christmas cheer to older generations, and it all starts with seniors becoming active participants rather than observers.

The Little Scholars joined Odyssey residents and enjoyed some old-fashioned activities that were common during the seniors’ era such as cookie decorating and making gifts.

Odyssey founder and CEO Phil Usher says there are many ways families can get the elderly involved in the festivities and fun.

“We want to see our seniors getting involved in some all-inclusive, family-friendly projects for the holiday season and we need to get out of the ‘stick them in the corner’ mentality,” says Phil.

“What I have found very successful previously, is encouraging Grandma or Grandad to participate in projects that were common in their era.

“This includes things like a special drink, recipe or a craft-based decorative tradition.

“Young children can also benefit from this as it offers something new and, in most cases, sparks a sense of nostalgia within a family, which is what the holidays are all about.”
